Russia may attract WB experts to carbon experiment in Sakhalin

GLASGOW, Nov 12 (PRIME) -- Russia and the World Bank (WB) are discussing attracting the bank’s experts to a carbon experiment on the Sakhalin Island, Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk told PRIME on Friday.

In September, President Vladimir Putin said that the Sakhalin Region will hold an experiment to regulate emissions and entrapments of greenhouse gases. During the project, companies will submit carbon reports and publish results of their climate projects so that the Sakhalin Island reaches carbon neutrality in 2026.

“The World Bank pays special attention to the Sakhalin carbon experiment. We are discussing attracting experts of the bank to participation at some of its stages. There also is an entire array of directions for possible cooperation with the World Bank that we are discussing today,” he said.

Russia has no plans to borrow from the WB, but the organization has extensive competences in many issues, including climate. The country and the WB plan to hold a working seminar on climate soon, he said.
